Rocky's Mountains
by D. Jean Quarles
Excerpt:

A cowbell clanged as I opened the door of Alma's Cafe and the intoxicating aroma of old-fashioned grilled hamburgers, homemade French fries and coffee surrounded me. According to the engraved sign over the door, the dive served food and spirits. From the stuffed two headed calf sitting high on a shelf, to the brands burned into the wood plank tables, the diner practically exuded the essence of the old west. I sighed in pure bliss. This was what I had traveled half way across the country to find. Suddenly, the journey from Minnesota to Wyoming seemed worth it in spite of the endless road with too many long nights sleeping in the car and too little food.
"Afternoon," the old man behind the counter said. He had to be eighty years old, with a red face deeply etched with experience. His eyes were pale blue pools surrounded by deep folds of craggy ledges. He looked like the kind who would be a sucker for a hard luck story. I decided it was time to let go of my pride and beg.

Description :
Laura, a young woman from Minnesota, travels to Sheridan, Wyoming looking to experience the mountains. There she finds work at Alma's, a small bar and diner filled with quirky characters - the owner, J.T., is a grizzled man worn by life and his rustic regulars are more than a handful for the naive, Laura.
In this setting, Laura finds herself drawn to Rocky, the cocky short order cook who appears one day when his winter job is finished on the mountain. While Laura is obsessed with Rocky, it seems his interest is in locating the Lost Cabin gold mine with a sheepherder named Joaquin Soto. Searching the Big Horn Moutnains for gold, Laura is out of her element. The wilderness is daunting, and Joaquin, well, he isn't at all what he seems to be.
Filled with excitement and adventure, Rocky's Mountains will leave you breathless.

This book turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. It's filled with an ecclectic group of real characters. Laura's a dynamic woman who struggles to overcome extraordinary events. Settings are described vividly. There are plenty of twists to keep you guessing what will happen next. Good read.

This was such a refreshing read. Having grown up near the Big Horn and Rocky Mountains I knew the places described and really felt I was there. The author has such a knack of bringing you into the book, I didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend it, especially to those who live or have lived in the areas. Great job and can't wait for the next books.

This is one of the most unforgettable books I've ever read, mainly because the ending shocked me to the core. It didn't end the way I wanted it to, but that's life. It's realistic. Oddly, many of my friends, having read the book, hoped for the ending the way it is. Very few stories can get this kind of reaction.
At the heart of the story is a man seeking riches. His decisions have to balance wealth vs. danger. Obsession for money taints his thinking. Most of us experience this in our own lives. We might spend too much time at our job and not enough with our family. OR we might spend too much time having fun with our family and not enough time providing for them. These decisions are not simple.

Fire in the Hole
by D. Jean Quarles
Excerpt:

A breeze blew through the trees beside them and the odor of pine and sage was whisked up to her. She loved being up on the rock, the feel of the hard surface beneath her fingers. Even though she knew accidents happened - horrible falls when anchors didn't hold or problems when a belayer's attention was diverted - she felt secure somehow. The rock she clung to had withstood so much, it was stable, stability that in the past had seemed hard for her to find. Her legs started to quake again and before Kurt could even call up advice, she moved to straighten them. Soon Abby was at the same place where she'd fallen moments before. She passed by the knob, realizing it was turned in such a way that when she applied more pressure for the move she couldn't hold on to it, and continued to search e for a better one. To her left, and just out of her reach, was a ledge that looked perfect. Abby scooted each of her feet as far to the left as possible and then tried again to grab the ledge. Her fingertips could just touch it. She stretched even more against the rock.
Above she heard a shriek. A red-tailed hawk circled over. Abby straightened her legs again, checked her hand hold, took a deep breath and then lunged with her whole body to reach the ledge. Her fingertips grasped it, but then couldn't support the rest of her body and she fell.
