THE EXODUS SERIES
Book I: Flight from the Water Planet
by Austine Etcheverry & D. Jean Quarles
Excerpt:

Gillian pulled the head phones from her ears. She didn’t hear anything for a second and was about to put them back on when a muffled cry rang out. Curious, she rose from her bed. She’d been working on her history assignment and had an English test in the morning to study for. But it was so odd to hear shouting.
At the top of the stairs, Gillian stopped and listened.
“We can’t stay.” Her mother’s voice was clipped. “It’s impossible.”
“We can’t leave either,” her father said. “It makes no difference. We can’t run far enough. Maybe it’s better that way.”
“We could try. We can’t give up. You never know,” her mother argued.
Her father’s head tilted and he gave her a reproachful look that accompanied the words, “You know.”

Book II: House of Glass
by Austine Etcheverry & D. Jean Quarles
Excerpt:

"We can't kick her out," said the plump woman with salt and pepper hair who stood to the left of Mandy. “She’s on her own."
Right before Mandy and her dog, Charlie, entered the Biosphere in Arizona, the Yellowstone super volcano erupted. It created a sonic boom that caused Mandy’s ears to ring, and formed a dark cloud in the sky that had chased her as she ran to the safety of the Biosphere.
Mandy had entered the large building and searched for other survivors, wandering corridors and going up and down staircases. Finally, after not seeing a soul, she stepped into a room, climbed into a bed, and shut her eyes. Exhausted, she had needed a moment to rest. All the night before she’d stayed awake. Worried the aliens who had snatched her brother, Derek, and Jesse, the boy they’d brought with them, would return. Even though Charlie, the American Bulldog she’d rescued, sat close, she hadn’t felt safe closing her eyes until she rested inside the dome.
Moments later, it seemed, a man found her and Charlie nestled on a bed. He woke her and then carefully demanded she follow him, staying well away from the dog, but carrying her two backpacks. Now she stood in the hallway with her fate being decided. Her head hurt and she had trouble concentrating. But she understood. The man didn't think there would be enough food for all of them.

Great book! I connected with the characters right from the beginning. Part of the allure of science fiction is never quite knowing what is going to happen next and this story captivated me from the beginning.
